[Quaker-MM] Quaker-MM Digest, Vol 1, Issue 3

Dear Friend Dale and others, Just to whet your appetite for the book about clerking a monthly meeting (not yet released) here is part of the solicitation for feedback I sent out to California clerks in December 2006:.

.......Are you a past or present monthly meeting clerk? Your ideas and experiences are needed for a book about the challenges and rewards of serving as clerk of a monthly meeting. If you kept a journal while you were clerking, get it out now!

And if you are a person who has long observed monthly meeting clerks at work, your ideas are also needed.....

Why were you chosen to be clerk? Did you want to be clerk at that time? Who did you consult with, what did you read? What did you wear? Did you offer ministry more often than before? Did you “inherit” some Meeting issues from the previous clerk?

What does the assistant clerk do for you? How do you relate to the recording clerk? To the clerk of Ministry and Oversight? Are you supposed to keep the committees functioning well? Do you have responsibility for the building and the Meeting’s money? Is it your fault if Meeting gets bogged down or out of whack?

What is the role of the “grapevine” in Meetings? Are you supposed to be a peace maker, preventing rifts and promoting community? Or is it good for the Meeting to get shaken up from time to time?

Are you seen as an authority figure, especially by newcomers and visitors? Are you the Meeting’s host or hostess? Are you the one who deals with disruptions during Meeting for Worship? Are you the fall guy when things go wrong?

What principals and tricks of the trade do you use in running a Meeting for Business?
In preparing for it, and in following up? How do you prevent excess speaking during MfB?

How have you dealt with marriages, memorials, travel minutes, and difficult membership issues? What about sexual abuse or harassment?

How does clerking affect your personal life? Your partner? Your children? Do you have secrets you hope Meeting won’t find out about?

Is being clerk hard for you? Are there rewards which make it worth while? Where did you get the most support? What is it like when you get to the end of your term – are you eager for a break, or do you feel left out of things?

Do these sample questions trigger responses in you? Do e-mail or call me.......

Dear Dale,
I have no idea , but obviously I'm on it too -- perhaps its a mystic medium
lying in wait like a seed in the earth - just waiting for a wonderful
person like to to discover it and then connect with others.

Hello Friends,

Welcome to Quaker-MM, a international list to discuss issues of interest to
Monthly Meeting clerks as we continue to learn our role and learn more about
Quaker process at the Monthly Meeting level.

Perhaps we could start by introducing ourselves?

Please post a note to the list letting us know what your interests are in
this area, and some background on your experience with clerking.

In the Light,

Bruce
(Clerk, Annapolis Valley MM, Canadian YM)
